Family Environment

As a small school with a low teacher-student ratio, we offer a personal approach and excellent teacher-parent communication. Rather than getting lost in the crowd, students get to know just about everyone. Through special activities such as our school retreat, we encourage our students to develop strong friendships with their classmates and to welcome new students into the group. Some of our grades are combined due to size and space limitations. We have found it to have a positive learning impact on our students.

Disciplined Atmosphere

We believe a disciplined, structured school environment lends itself to learning and is ultimately the most enjoyable for the students. Students who need correction are handled in a loving but firm manner. We work together with the parents to correct a student's misbehavior. We consider character training to be an important aspect of our ministry of teaching.

Kindergarten

Heritage Baptist Academy is proud of its excellent K5 instructional program. Kindergarten students go to school for a full school day. Children must bring their own lunch, but snacks are provided. HBA kindergarten children study Bible, phonics, reading, writing, math, and art. They memorize Bible passages, learn songs and poems, and enjoy a weekly chapel time. The HBA kindergarten uses the A Beka Book curriculum, which is widely regarded for its strong phonics-based approach to reading. Most kindergarten students are reading words and sentences, and some even short books, by the end of the year. Our kindergarten provides an excellent foundation for elementary school.

Elementary and Junior High (Grades 1–8)

Heritage Baptist Academy’s elementary and junior high divisions offer students at these grade levels thorough and well-rounded instruction in all core academic subjects including reading, writing, grammar, math, science, history, spelling, and Bible. Intensive phonics instruction lasts through the second grade, while developmental reading classes—in which students build vocabulary, reading speed, and comprehension—continue through grade 8. The majority of our textbooks are produced by Christian publishers such as A Beka Book and BJU Press. Bible instruction takes place in daily Bible classes and weekly chapels. Students are also expected to memorize Bible passages and catechism questions and answers.

Elementary and junior high students also enjoy opportunities to be involved in extracurricular activities such as school programs, sports, and individual or group competition in academics, music, speech, art, and Bible at the district and state levels. For example, students in grades 4–6 can join the elementary Bible quiz team, which can compete at the regional and state meets.

Secondary (Grades 9–12)

Heritage Baptist Academy furnishes high school students with a complete college-preparatory education. Our general and academic diploma programs exceed the requirements of the Tennessee State Board of Regents. Secondary students have access to HBA’s computer labs. Our combination of a qualified faculty and small class sizes helps to create a studious environment and opportunities for teachers to give students individual attention. In some classes, our students are taught via a DVD video course. The class is supplemented by a well qualified proctor.

Besides working on their core studies, high school students at HBA may also participate in interscholastic sports teams, school programs and dramatic productions, school camp, and individual and group competition in academics, music, speech, art, and Bible at the district and state levels. Our students stay very busy!
